Christmas spending by 14% falls at Christmas

Spanish consumers moderated spending in the last Christmas campaign. If the average disbursement in 2017 stood at 514 euros, last year it was 14% lower and fell to 451 euros, according to the Cetelem Observatory data on "Spending on Christmas by Spaniards", which analyzes the consumer behavior with respect to actual spending during the holidays.

As for the products most purchased during Christmas 2018, 62% of respondents said they bought clothes (sector, however, has experienced a decrease of two points over last year); 41% have acquired a product related to footwear and accessories (which loses three points compared to the previous year); and thirdly, 39% of the respondents indicated that they had bought some perfume, a figure that remains stable with respect to the 2018 data.

On the other hand, 38% of respondents said they bought a toy during this period, a sector that increases by three percentage points compared to 2017; the books, with 35% of buyers, have also experienced a growth of four points with respect to the same figure of the previous year. Finally, products related to leisure (tickets, shows, etc.), which, with 20% of buyers, have grown by 10 percentage points over the previous year.

Regarding the intention of spending, in the survey carried out last December, the Spaniards manifested an expenditure forecast of 469 euros for the Christmas campaign, which, finally, and according to the statements of the January survey, has not been reached. . The data shows that a real average cost has been 4% lower than what they originally intended to spend.

Finally, 27.6% of the respondents said they made a higher expenditure on Christmas purchases in 2018, which represents a decrease of 3.7 percentage points compared to the same figure of the previous year.

However, the majority response continues to be that of those who show an expenditure equal to Christmas 2017 (43.6%), with an increase of 2.4 points. The study also shows an increase of 1.4 points in the percentage of Spaniards who say they have spent less this Christmas (28.9% in 2018 compared to 27.5% in 2017).
