The most interesting fashion shows of 2019

From London to New York, passing through Florence and Madrid : these are the most outstanding fashion exhibitions on the 2019 fashion calendar.

CHRISTIAN DIOR: DESIGNER OF DREAMS   (Victoria & Albert Museum, London)

"There is no other country in the world, apart from mine, whose lifestyle I like so much, I love English traditions, English courtesy, English architecture, I even love English cooking."

In response to these words of Christian Dior, how was the exhibition that pays homage to his legacy to go through the English capital?

The exhibition covers the history and impact of one of the most influential designers of the 20th century from 1947 to the present, with special emphasis on the relationship between the Maison and Great Britain.

(From February 22 to July 14, 2019)

ANIMALIA FASHION (Palazzo Pitti, Florence)

An exhibition conceived as a fantastic hyperbolic museum of natural history that shows the animal world as a source of inexhaustible inspiration for designers.

Here clothing, accessories and jewelry become an experience , a journey through the history of zoology, but above all in a discovery of shapes and colors that evoke insects, fish, birds, shells, common and rare species.

In the different rooms of the Museo della Moda e del Costume, located in the Palazzo Pitti, we find stuffed animals that live with other real animals such as butterflies and other insects as well as drawings that go from the year 2000 until today.

(From January 8 to May 5, 2019)

MARY QUANT   (Victoria & Albert Museum, London)

"The goal of fashion is to make modern clothing available to everyone," said Mary Quant, the British who revolutionized the way she dressed and popularized the use of the miniskirt in the 60s.

In the show dedicated to the designer , more than 200 garments and accessories are exhibited, including pieces never seen from Quant's personal archive.

Mini skirts, hot pants , tights, makeup ... the revolution is served in Victoria & Albert.

(From April 6, 2019 to February 16, 2020)

CAMP: NOTES ON FASHION (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)

One of the most eagerly awaited fashion shows of the year is undoubtedly that of the Metropolitan Museum of New York , inaugurated with a gala in which all the guests come with a dress code appropriate to the theme on which the exhibition is based.

If last year we attended a dialogue between fashion and religion with Heaven Bodies , this year the exhibition is inspired by the essay Notes on Camp , by Susan Sontag.

In this work, the missing American writer raises different ways of interpreting the term 'camp', which Andrew Bolton, curator of the show summarized as "the love for the unnatural: the artifice and exaggeration, the style at the expense of content, the triumph of the epiceno style ".

(From May 9 to September 8, 2019)

BALENCIAGA AND THE SPANISH CULTURE   (Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid)

Fashion and painting go hand in hand in the exhibition that the Thyssen Museum dedicates to Cristóbal Balenciaga, who, for many, is the most influential fashion designer of all time.

Master's works of art are linked to the tradition of Spanish painting from the 16th to the 20th centuries   highlighting the references to the culture of our country present in the designer's creations.

The sobriety and minimalism of the religious garments, the brightness of the bullfighters' suit of lights that we see reinterpreted in a paillettes jacket or the black velvet that takes us to the court of the Austrias are some of the brushstrokes that we will find in the exhibition .

A careful selection of paintings from Spanish private collections and different national museums will be shown, such as the Prado Museum or the Fine Arts of Seville, Valencia and Bilbao.

In addition, the exhibition, curated by Eloy Martínez de la Pera, will feature a set of valuable pieces of clothing, from the Balenciaga Museum of Guetaria, the Costume Museum of Madrid and other institutions.

(From June 18 to September 22, 2019)

MINIMALISM / MAXIMALISM: FASHION EXTREMES (Fashion Institute of Technology, New York)

Less is more or more is more? Designers such as Calvin Klein or Giorgio Armani are famous for their minimalist style, dominated by purity and simple lines.

Others, such as Dries Van Noten, Alessandro Michele or Dolce & Gabbana, advocate maximalism and seek beauty in excess and saturation.

Although some firms can clearly identify with one of the two extremes, the truth is that throughout the history of fashion periods have passed in which dominated one aesthetic or another, a cyclical nature that shows the exhibition   Minimalism / Maximalism: Fashion Extremes , from the 18th century to the present.

(From February 28 to April 20, 2019)

TIM WALKER (Victoria & Albert Museum, London)

The work of one of the most acclaimed photographers in the world of fashion arrives at the V & A Museum , including a new series of photographs in which we find influences from the museum's own collections.

A dream journey through the fantastic worlds of Tim Walker through snapshots, movies, photographic sets and installations where beauty reaches the most extravagant and magical limits.

The Briton is a regular contributor to fashion headers such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar ; or firms such as Dior, Burberry, Blumarine and Come des Garçons.

He has also worked with film director Tim Burton and premiered The Lost Explorer in 2010, winning the award for best short film at the 2011 Chicago United Film Festival.
